The year is 1951. I am a senior in high school and in love all the time! Oft times Saturday night would find me a the top of Mulholland Drive overlooking the twinkling lights of the San Fernando Valley canoodling with my current love affair listening to Music Until Dawn, "Brought to you by American Airlines." I knew it was time to go home when they played the last song of the night at midnight, "Dream," by the Pied Pipers, still a song I love to listen to. For a little bit of time all is right with the world again. Who would have thought that many years later I would be a pilot for American Airlines?
How ironic that you should mention the music till dawn sponsored by American Airlines, and on Mulhollandn which is a whisper from where I live…I haven’t thought of that radio episode in…my God 70 years…it’s going bye way too quickly…

Does anybody know the location of a beautiful outdoor facility for dining and dancing, in the video featuring Harry James & Helen Forrest singing I Had the Craziest Dream. I feel the video is from the 1940’s or 50’s, but there is one gorgeous raven haired girl in a mini skirt…go figure!

Every generation has it's good and bad qualities. Because popular media tends to celebrate the worst is no reason to give up on the art today. There's great work being done by people of all ages still, you might have to search a bit more to find it though.
Unfortunately (in many ways) it was a time which will never come again BUT thanks to Y.T. we can *experience* a bit of it!!

I was 5 y/o in '51 -----------sorry to say, I don't remember this gorgeous rendition of a classic. Just hearing it makes me sad, & miss my Dad , Mom, Brother & sister. Understood. Between 2016-23, my Wife and I saw the loss of three of her siblings, and her Mom in 2019. Then she herself passed in November 2023 after being I'll for years. Now I feel abruptly alone many times.

Always loved this song. Appeals to the imagination which kids today seem to have lost sight of. Relaxation, doing nothing, thinking of happy times, gratitude for just being alive. An 81 yr old retired Canadian teacher.

I was born in 1968 and I grew up in the 80's, but I've always loved music from the 40's. This song is so beautiful. Such great harmony. I wish this genre of music would make a comeback. I'd rather hear this kind of pop music than the so-called "pop music" that's on the radio now.

Born in the 200s here, but 100% agree that modern Pop music will never come anywhere close to these amazing masterpieces.
It was not my era, but I love the 40's music. It's soft, relaxing and very romantic.Unfortunately,the 40's era also had serious problems If some of these star were round today I would pay to see them. I would have loved to see Doris Day,Glenn Miller,Jo Stafford and a sober Judy Garland perform.

The harmony is so beautiful it brings tears to my eyes.
In the 80s, I had my own 9-piece "Big Band", and we played all the popular songs from the 30s and 40s. "In The Mood", "Tuxedo Junction", "One o'clock Jump", "Moonlight Serenade" and 50 others, but "Dream" was my favorite. Cannot get enough of those Big Band harmonies!

Nothing like close harmony. Even better when it is a capella, and preferably a Barbershop arrangement. Then the angels sing. It is amazing when 4 people sing 6 notes simultaneously.
Everytime I hear this song I stop what I'm doing, close my eyes, and listen. It brings tears to my eyes just to hear it. It's so beautiful!

I turned 69 years old in 2022, but way too young to remember this era. However When I started to use the internet 30 years ago I went searching for things that might interest me. I came away extremely impressed with Jo Stafford and the Pied Pied Pipers and also Louanne Hogan. I know June Hutton was in-between both ladies.
I think overall the big band era was outstanding lead my Glenn Miller. It is also wonderful to hear Sinatra in the Tommy Dorsey Era.
I actually had a lot of favorites from the 40's era that was not my era like Doris Day,Sinatra, Dean Martin,Perry Como,Nat King Cole,Ella Fitzgerald. and Jo Stafford.

"Dream" was my introduction to Johnny Mercer when we sang this song in high school choir, a lifetime ago. Since then, my admiration and respect for this truly great man continued to grow as I discovered more of his songs, his recordings and learned more about his remarkable life. Thank you for posting this gentle and tasteful coda to Mr. Mercer, his life and works.

Alas, no; he passed in 1976 (born 1909).
A quick web search will yield a comprehensive page on Mercer at Wikipedia; there are also a page for him at the Songwriters Hall of Fame (of which he was the founding president) and a dedicated Johnny Mercer website.
Finally, there is a very enjoyable book, published in 1982, "Our Huckleberry Friend: The Life, Times and Lyrics of Johnny Mercer" (the title alludes to the song he wrote with frequent collaborator Henry Mancini for the film "Breakfast at Tiffany's," 1961: "Moon River" - which won an Oscar and two Grammy Awards).

@@LJBSullivan one man can wear a suit in 2021, it will not bring me joy. One man can drive a 1941 Pontiac in emerald iridescent forest green with white walls and thin original Firestones. It will not make my hope for a better future any more realized. One person can develop the accents we had back in the 1920's to 1970's, but frankly it will not compel anything of hope in my heart, but I will be proud of that young person for doing so. You don't understand that having something isn't enough, of course you are content because you never witnessed how absolutely tear jerking beautiful the mid century era was of the 1930's, 1940's, and 1950's... it's just a distant google search when you asked about the war. It has no significance to you...but to us, it is everything, there's this warm color speaking to me just beyond my reach, then I fall on the floor of a wet cave as that mellow glowing light fades, the chords of beauty disappearing. It's everything that I want, not the cars, not the outfits, not the dialect, not the vocals, not that ingenious which is technically all of that and more,...but I want It all, everything back. My ideal is going exactly back in time, not a fake different version of it. I know how wonderful I was, racism and sexism was not a quality shared in the 1950's as much as you all think. Or guess rather.

Im only 14 but i already know i want this song played at my funeral, it just seems like a peaceful way to be remembered and i want a song that is actually able to be appreciated. A great song sung by one of the best groups of that time.
The great Rolly Bundock at the bass. Back in the '80's and '90's I played drums for pianist Murray Arnold in Palm Springs, Ca. at the private golf resorts and Rolly was on bass at the gigs. Sometimes, the great bassist Arnold Fishkind was on bass, too.
It’s crazy how much I miss music that wasn’t even from my time. It’s just not the same anymore.
I remember watching the Pied Pipers on TV in 1950's as a young child!!! G-o-n-e are those mesmerizing days!!!
The closest that I’ve come to this wonderful era, was at Elitch Gardens and the Broadmore resort in Colorado Springs…there high in the Rockies you could dine and dance to these romantic songs, enjoy superb dining and glide across the dance floor under a stardust sky….

I was stationed at Travis AFB, CA and almost every night I would listen to The Lucky Lager Dance Time and the announcer always played this at the close. I didn't know about happy smoke, drive-by shootings and you could walk down Market St without fear. Those kind of times have gone forever. When Jo Stafford was with the P/P they recorded it and I think that was it. No one called me DUDE. hambone
